Both both messages are meaningful, and sublimely ask the listener "What Type of Heart/Love Do You Have?" If the Torah is your foundation, then its internal and will affect your external mood. But if the external (world) is your foundation, then it will affect the internal, your mood, and your decision(s) will be based on public approval. The Humble's love sacrificed their lives for the greater good - their brethren. Many lives were lost in the Holocaust, but many lives were saved to tell the story. The Jews Live! In the end, light overcame darkness, and love won! Joshua and Caleb dared to challenge the majority with their faith, perception, and obedience to "truth." In the end, their love for GD, His vision, and His Portion won. The Jews live! A "lie" has just enough truth in it to be deceptive. That's why the Prophet Samuel said that man looks at the outward appearance(s), but GD looks at the Heart. Thank you for an invaluable learning experience. 🕊💜 Reply

"Other German writers who had quit the country when Hitler rose to power felt disgust for those such as Fallada who had remained, compromising their work under the Nazi regime. Most notable of these critics was Fallada's contemporary Thomas Mann, who had fled Nazi repression early on and lived abroad. He expressed harsh condemnation for writers like Fallada who, though opponents of Nazism, made concessions which compromised their work. "It may be superstitious belief, but in my eyes, any books which could be printed at all in Germany between 1933 and 1945 are worse than worthless and not objects one wishes to touch. A stench of blood and shame attaches to them. They should all be pulped."[20]"

Wow! This really hits me as a 2nd generation Holocaust survivor...there's a certain measure of comfort in that there was a couple who cared enough to try, and a measure of disappointment that they were almost the only ones! However the message is a very strong one. May we all remain true to G-d's truth, no matter what, and in His mercy may G-d not test us any more...thank you Baila! Reply
